In contrast to conventional techniques an Active Front End uses IGBT technology and its main purpose is to convert a three phase AC supply to DC power for an AC drive. The AC drive then inverts the DC power to a three phase Pulse Width Modulated supply to an AC motor. Another advantage is that the DC link voltage can be varied up to the peak value of the line voltage. Some Active Front End converters can also feed energy back into the power supply network from the DC link circuit. This would take place when a motor is being braked.
